RENOVATED GREAT WATERS COURSE RETURNS BETTER THAN EVER

Submit to Digg digg it | Submit to Reddit reddit | Add to delicious delicious | Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon | Share on Facebook Facebook | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn
Greensboro, Ga. (March 4, 2010) - Under the direction of the architectural staff from Nicklaus Design, the first substantial renovation project on the award-winning Great Waters course at Reynolds Plantation is complete. The result is a version that is better than ever and again ready for play this spring.   Great Waters, a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course that opened in 1992, is a dramatic layout that offers some of the most breathtaking golf scenery in the southeast. Consistently ranked among the Top 100 courses in the nation since it opened in 1992, Great Waters  earned the distinction from Links Magazine as one of the "10 most significant and influential courses of the past two decades."   To ensure Great Waters remains just as significant during the next two decades, Reynolds Plantation implemented a restoration plan for the greens and bunkering that has restored them to the shapes and sizes of Nicklaus' original specifications.   Greenside bunkers have been slightly tweaked throughout the golf course, to incorporate new drainage and reinforce the faces. The modifications have not impacted the integrity of the design; rather, they enhance shot values.   The major alteration is the complete turf changeover on all 18 greens, from the original Penncross Bentgrass to Miniverde Bermudagrass, a unique variety that was not yet developed when Great Waters was built. The new product is a superior putting surface that will remain more consistent, year round.   "Great Waters' reputation as a world-class golf experience plays a significant role in the Reynolds Plantation golf community," said Mercer Reynolds, Chairman of Reynolds Plantation. "The course is credited for putting Reynolds Plantation on the map. It has a great history, and the renovation assures the golf course maintains its level of excellence in the future."

Reynolds Plantation members will get the first look at the revitalized Great Waters layout starting March 15, with guest play to resume April 1. Nicklaus is schedule to make a personal inspection of the finished product and serve as special guest for a dedication ceremony on April 6.

The second golf course built at Reynolds Plantation, Great Waters is the only Nicklaus course on Lake Oconee. With nine holes lining the lake shores, Great Waters quickly gained a reputation for its scenic beauty, as well.

While the architectural staff from Nicklaus Design was assigned to the job from the outset, much of the Great Waters renovation project was carried out by the Reynolds golf course maintenance crew. Each phase was coordinated to maintain the design and strategic objectives Nicklaus intended in 1992. Original plans and drawings were referenced throughout the project, particularly to locate the original edges of the greens in order to return them to the exact same size they were on the day it opened.   As for the greenside bunkers, most of the changes won't be visible to the golfer's eye, since they involve modernization of drainage and irrigation systems underground. To prevent erosion on the faces of the bunkers, the new ones have grass growing lower down the sides, making the slopes slightly less dramatic, but the obstacle no less hazardous.   "By having Jack Nicklaus' name on Great Waters, we are responsible for part of his legacy," said Bob Mauragas, vice-president of golf operations at Reynolds Plantation. "By completing a project like this, it is satisfying for all of us at Reynolds Plantation to know we are being good caretakers of that legacy."

Greensboro, Ga. (February 16, 2010) - Six of the top 25 college golf teams in the nation, led by No. 1-ranked Oklaho ma State University, return to The Landing at Reynolds Plantation for the fifth annual Linger Longer Invitational, March 26-28.

One of the premier spring tournaments of the collegiate season, the Linger Longer Invitational features 16 teams competing for 54 holes in both team and individual stroke-play format on the award-winning Landing layout which will play to 7,051 yards (par 72) and was designed by golf course architect Bob Cupp.

Hosted by Mercer University and Kennesaw State University, the Linger Longer Invitational is a showcase for teams from coast to coast, with the University of Georgia returning to defend a championship it has won three times (2006, 2007, 2009).

"We continue to enjoy the participation of a great field every year, on a golf course that is in great shape and provides an ideal test," said Coach Andrew Tredway of Mercer University, which finished a solid fourth last year.  "The support of the participating coaches, their schools and Reynolds Plantation is outstanding."

Last year the top-ranked Bulldogs captured a showdown of No. 1 vs. No. 2 by finishing two strokes ahead Oklahoma State, with a winning total of 867, only 3 over par.  Individually, OSU's Trent Whitekiller, then a junior, earned his first career victory by only one shot, finishing at 208, 8 under par.

This year, joining Golfweek magazine's top-ranked Cowboys and No. 21-ranked Bulldogs as leading contenders are No. 5 Florida State, No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 12 Alabama and No. 22 Georgia Tech.  The field is rounded out by Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Furman, Louisville, Oklahoma, San Jose State, South Alabama and South Carolina-Aiken.

Since its inception, the Linger Longer Invitational has been played on courses that are part of the Reynolds Plantation collection - The Oconee Course the first two years, and The Landing the past two.

Individually, the tournament will showcase a field full of all-Americans, with nine of the Top 20 players in the 2010 season rankings scheduled to compete, including No. 1 Peter Uihlein, an Oklahoma State sophomore from Orlando, Fla.; No. 2 Bud Cauley, an Alabama sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., No. 3 Russell Henley, a Georgia juni0r from Macon; No. 5 Hunter Hamrick, an Alabama sophomore from Montgomery; and No. 6 Morgan Hoffman, an Oklahoma State sophomore from Wyckoff, N.J.

The first golf course built on popular Lake Oconee in 1986, The Landing features a Scottish-style variety of holes that wind through naturally wooded areas and rolling hills, with three holes that wrap dramatically along the lakeshore.

Spectators are welcome to walk the course with the teams.  Admission to the Invitational is free.

TaylorMade Chooses Reynolds Plantation as location for 2010 commercials and print ads

The TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company's top PGA TOUR Professionals visited Reynolds Plantation this week to film commercials and take photographs for their 2010 advertising campaigns.

Pros such as Sean O'Hair, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Mike Weir, Retief Goosen, Kenny Perry and Paula Creamer, were filmed at Bob Cupp's Plantation Course and at Tom Fazio's National Course during the three-day shoot.

A few lucky Reynolds Plantation residents were even "ambushed" by one of Reynolds Plantation's newest members, Sean O'Hair, who was enjoying a short break from the filming. They played a hole with the three-time TOUR winner, as O'Hair showed off TaylorMade's new golf ball, called the Penta.

"Access to 117 distinctive holes of golf surrounded by incredible natural beauty makes Reynolds Plantation the ideal setting to shoot our commercials," says Robin English of TaylorMade-adidas Golf.  "Very few places in the world offer such variety of golf all in one location and we are thrilled to have such a stunning backdrop for our advertising."

"We have been honored to host TaylorMade-adidas at Reynolds Plantation to film its advertising on four different occasions," says Bob Mauragas, vice president of golf operations. "It is a pleasure to be associated with a brand like TaylorMade-adidas that seeks the highest quality, continuously strives for innovation and shares our passion for excellence."

While on-site for the filming, the pros stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation.

"The combination of world class golf and lodging just over an hour from Atlanta makes this a convenient location to assemble following THE TOUR Championship at East Lake," says English. "Although a shoot of this size requires a great deal of work, the pros and crew still find time to enjoy all that Reynolds Plantation has to offer."

The relationship between TaylorMade and Reynolds Plantation was solidified two years ago when TaylorMade opened its first Kingdom away from company headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif.  The Kingdom is "where the pros go" to work on their game and to have clubs custom-fit and custom-built to their specifications.

Greensboro, Ga. (September 24, 2009) - Reynolds Golf Academy student Jean Reynolds will be teeing it up on the LPGA Tour for the 2010 season.  Reynolds earned her LPGA Tour card with a second place finish on the Duramed FUTURES Tour season money list.  The top-10 money winners on the Duramed FUTURES Tour, the developmental tour of the LPGA, are granted full status on the LPGA Tour.

Reynolds, from Newnan, Ga., is a pupil of Charlie King, director of instruction at the Reynolds Golf Academy.  She had a stellar 2009 season on the Duramed FUTURES Tour with two victories, including one in her first start of the season, and a second place finish on the money list.  In addition to her wins, she posted five top-five finishes.

"Jean is a very talented player," says King.  "From the first year we worked together, we figured out that Jean's golf swing was her strength, and that her short game and mental approach were keeping her from reaching her full potential.  This year, she looked forward to every day of competition.  Jean proves that you can have fun playing competitive golf, and having fun helps you play better."

The highlight of Reynolds' season was her performance in the 2009 U.S Women's Open Championship at Saucon Valley in Bethlehem, Pa.  Reynolds held at least a top-three position on the leaderboard after each of the first three rounds of the championship, even taking the lead during first round play.  Her strong performance resulted in a T-17 finish and a tremendous learning experience about competition at its highest level.

Top 100 Teacher’s eBook Takes Method Teaching to Task

Submit to Digg digg it | Submit to Reddit reddit | Add to delicious delicious | Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon | Share on Facebook Facebook | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn
GREENSBORO, Ga. (September 8, 2009) - GOLF Magazine Top 100 Instructor Charlie King has released the instructor version of his eBook, "The New Rules of Golf Instruction," which is available for free download at NewRulesGolf.com. The eBook, which was featured in the Wall Street Journal on April 2, takes method teachers, and in fact the golf instruction industry, to task.

In an excerpt from the book, King writes, "The student is not hitting the ball well or poorly because of the look of his swing (method or model teaching).  The ball is being hit well or poorly because of the high, medium or low skill level of the golfer."

He adds, "Golfers want to play better and instruction has fallen short for them.  Skill-based teaching is the answer, not models or methods.  All other sports use skill-based instruction.  Golf has not done this consistently."

The eBook features the nine areas where traditional (Old Rules) golf instruction has failed and introduces the "New Rules," a modern set of ideas and a higher set of standards for instructors.  King, the director of instruction at the Reynolds Golf Academy, believes the New Rules will pave the way for teachers to give clear and more effective instruction, allowing golfers of all skill levels to play their best golf.

"If we don't have a better system of teaching golf, golfers are not going to get better," says King.  "When lessons help golfers improve in a logical way, they stick with the game.  Old Rules make you look like a golfer, while New Rules make you into a golfer."

King's "New Rules" includes chapters on the full swing, the short game, the mental side of golf, practice and programs, fitness, the use of video, club fitting and communication.  For more information on "The New Rules of Golf Instruction," visit "The New Rules of Golf Instruction" Website.  The New Rules of Golf Instruction Blog is now an official Alltop.com golf blog.  Find it here.

TAYLORMADE TOUR TRAILER ARRIVING AT THE KINGDOM AT REYNOLDS PLANTATION

Tour Trailer Ribbon CuttingGreensboro, Ga. (March 23, 2009) - A favorite hideout of PGA Tour professionals during any given tournament week is the traveling equipment trailer.  These high-tech workshops on wheels are where the pros go to have custom-fitted clubs built, get their lofts and lies checked, have their set re-gripped, grind their wedges, or just kick back for a few minutes to shoot the breeze.

Since the tour trailer is as much a part of daily life on the PGA Tour as a courtesy car, it's appropriate that the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation -which, by invitation, allows golfers inside the private world of the tour professional - will soon include a real tour trailer as a regular part of the experience.

Starting in April, the custom-designed tour trailer that has served TaylorMade-adidas Golf Tour Staff professionals for the past six years, which has visited hundreds of tour stops and in which thousands of TaylorMade clubs have been built, will be parked permanently at the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation.  The trailer, where custom-fit equipment will be built for Kingdom guests, will further solidify a visit to the Kingdom as the ultimate golf experience.

The Kingdom is located at Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee, Ga., one of the world's renowned golf resort communities.  The Kingdom is available to the elite Tour Staff of TaylorMade-adidas Golf.  The Kingdom is also open to the approximately 2,000 TaylorMade-adidas Golf Staff club professionals from across the country and their guests, as well as to small corporate groups.  Guests can expect the same service and precision-fit equipment as TaylorMade's Tour professionals receive.

"The Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation is where the pros go, so adding an authentic tour trailer signifies even more precisely what the facility does for the best players in the world," said Bob Mauragas, vice president of golf operations at Reynolds Plantation.  "It will be fully staffed and fully operational, just as it has been every week on the PGA Tour for the past six seasons, giving us the ability to generate TaylorMade products on site."

The Kingdom is also home to a two-day total game-enhancement experience unlike any in the world, the "Tour Experience".  The "Tour Experience" includes a round of golf, personalized instruction and candid interaction with a TaylorMade Tour professional.  "Tour Experience" participants enjoy the same instant response time to their equipment needs at the Kingdom that TaylorMade's pros receive on tour.

Greensboro, Ga.  (January 9, 2008) - The Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation was created for tour pros, but is not their private realm.

Located on Lake Oconee at one of the world's renowned golf resort communities, the Kingdom is home to "The TaylorMade Tour Experience at Reynolds Plantation," an exclusive, two-day ultimate golf experience that allows regular golfers inside the private world of the touring professional.

A comprehensive game-enhancement experience unlike any in the world, the "Tour Experience" includes a round of golf, personalized instruction and candid interaction with a tour professional from the elite staff of TaylorMade-adidas.  Exclusive to the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation, the "Tour Experience" is an extension of the services provided to tour pros who regularly visit the compound for personal testing sessions and equipment fittings, as well as to use the tour-quality setting to hone their game.

The Tour Experience package price (three nights, two days) is $9000 per person, plus taxes and gratuities.  Each Tour Experience is limited to six participants and the tour professional and will be offered on 16 separate dates in 2008.  Among TaylorMade's tour professional staff who plan to be on-site at Reynolds Plantation this year are the likes of Joe Ogilvie, Kenny Perry, Scott Verplank and Hale Irwin.

"The opening of The Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation further validates us as a premier golf destination," said Bob Mauragas, Reynolds Plantation's vice president of golf operations.  "Now golfers can visit and not only enjoy our great collection of golf courses, but at the Kingdom they can engage in an incomparable tour experience that can change their games dramatically for the better."

The "Tour Experience" begins with a high-tech fitting for a complete set of TaylorMade clubs custom-made for each participant.  Custom-fitting at the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation is performed with the MATT System (Motion Analysis Technology by TaylorMade), a sophisticated club-fitting tool that combines nine high-speed cameras and a computer to gather vital swing information and statistics through the use of a launch monitor, multiple high-speed video cameras and a computer.  That evening participants will enjoy dinner with the TaylorMade tour professional.

The next morning participants enjoy a chef-prepared breakfast and receive instruction at the Reynolds Golf Academy, led by Charlie King, a GOLF Magazine Top 100 instructor.  Its resources include an unparalleled short-game practice facility that affords players to practice almost every greenside shot imaginable and an 18,000 square foot putting green.  Likewise the spacious driving range, which is shared by the Kingdom and the Academy, features a fairway bunker and uphill, downhill and sidehill lies.  In the afternoon, participants play a round of golf with clubs that have been built on-site overnight, accompanied by King and another PGA professional.

Unveiled last fall, the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation is the next generation of TaylorMade's first state-of-the-art club-testing and club-fitting facility, built in 1997 at its headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif.  Also named "The Kingdom," it was an innovative concept made available only to tour professionals for the purpose of testing prototype TaylorMade equipment.

The Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation occupies a beautifully renovated building located at the rear of the Oconee Course's main practice range, adjacent to an exceptional short-game practice facility that includes a full-scale par-3 target course.  The architecture features high ceilings, beautifully tiled floors and dark wood appointments, but with Southern styling that's consistent with the region and luxury lake-side properties nearby.

"There's just no better way to get this type of golf experience, other than actually being a touring professional," Mauragas said.  "We're excited to be the only place in the world that offers the complete combination of quality instruction and interaction with an elite TaylorMade tour professional, all in an unbelievable location."

The Kingdom also is available to TaylorMade-adidas Golf staff club professionals and their guests, and select corporate groups.

Reynolds Plantation was chosen by TaylorMade-adidas Golf (TMaG) as a "Kingdom" location for a variety of reasons, including:

  • To be more easily accessible to TMaG tour staff professionals and club staff professionals living east of the Mississippi River.
  • Reynolds Plantation's well-deserved reputation as a premier golf location and residential community dedicated to excellence and its access to a major international airport in Atlanta.
  • World-Class accommodations, which guests at the Kingdom will find at the AAA Five-Diamond Award-winning Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation.
  • Year-round golf at Reynolds Plantation's ultimate collection of championship-caliber golf courses: the Oconee (designed by Rees Jones), National (Tom Fazio) and Great Waters (Jack Nicklaus), as well as Plantation and Reynolds Landing (both by Bob Cupp).

"We can't imagine a better, more authentic golf location for it than Reynolds Plantation," said Robin English, TMaG's director of Kingdom operations.

Ribbon CuttingGreensboro, Ga. (September 19, 2007) - Linger Longer Communities launched its newest golf innovation with the grand opening of the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation on September 10th.  Over 100 attended the grand opening, including PGA Tour players Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Gary McCord and local favorite Charlie Rymer.  Reynolds Plantation was pleased to have Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and his wife in attendance.  The new game-enhancement facility is a partnership between Reynolds Plantation and TaylorMade-adidas Golf Company (TMaG).

The Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation is open to the over 250 members of the TMaG Tour Staff to test and be fit for new equipment which is custom-built to each players unique specifications on site. It's also open to TMaG Staff club professionals and their guests and small corporate groups.

Custom-fitting at The Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation is performed with TaylorMade's MATT System (Motion Analysis by TaylorMade), a sophisticated club-fitting tool that combines nine high-speed cameras and a computer to gather vital swing information and statistics through the use of a launch monitor, multiple high-speed video cameras and a computer. MATT distills that information to create a remarkably sophisticated computer-animated image of your swing that's viewable from every angle. MATT is also programmed to execute a multitude of calculations and measurements to develop a data-driven personal-swing profile.

Guests of the Kingdom will also have access to instruction at the Reynolds Golf Academy.  The Academy is led by Charlie King, a GOLF Magazine Top 100 instructor and author of "Golf's Red Zone Challenge." The Reynolds Golf Academy includes an unparalleled short-game practice facility that affords players the opportunity to practice almost any greenside shot imaginable, and includes an 18,000 square foot putting green. The spacious practice range, which is shared by the Kingdom and the Academy, features a fairway bunker and uphill, downhill and side-hill lies.

Reynolds Plantation was chosen as the location for TaylorMade's Kingdom for a variety of reasons, including:

▪ TMaG's desire to create a club-fitting and club-testing facility that would be more easily accessible to TaylorMade-adidas Golf Tour Staff professionals and club Staff professionals living or playing east of the Mississippi River.

▪ Reynolds Plantation's well-deserved reputation as a premier golf location dedicated to excellence. Located on 14,000 acres, it's one of the country's most successful and popular residential golf communities. Likewise, TaylorMade is a premium golf equipment brand dedicated to quality, performance and innovation.

▪ Reynolds Plantation is located one hour from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the most accessible airport in the world.

▪ Accommodations for Kingdom guests include the AAA Five Diamond Award-winning Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation.

▪ Reynolds Plantation offers a collection of world-class golf courses by world-class designers including Bob Cupp, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Rees Jones and the new members-only course by Jim Engh.

▪ The weather allows for year-round golf.

▪ Reynolds Plantation lies halfway between Atlanta and Augusta, both which have great historical significance to the game of golf.

"This fulfills our vision to open a Kingdom in the eastern United States, so that we can more easily serve many of our tour professionals, club professionals and brand loyalists," said Robin English, TMaG's director of Kingdom operations, "and we can't imagine a better, more authentic golf location for it than Reynolds Plantation."

"The opening of the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation further validates us as a premier golf destination," said Bob Mauragas, Reynolds Plantation's vice president of golf operations. "Now golfers can visit not only to enjoy our great courses, but they can also engage in an incomparable Kingdom experience that can change their games dramatically for the better."
